Hi Laine!
I think that Roger means leaning forward or backward in an attempt to compensate in the spine for limitations in the hips. :)
Thanks for checking in!

"To prevent this injury, the first rule is to never force your legs into any Lotus variations—either by pulling the foot strongly upward, pushing the knee downward, or thrusting your body forward or backward."

" thrusting your body forward or backward" what is this?

Hi Linda, thanks for getting in touch.
I would recommend taking a closer look at the alignment of your knees and ankles. Generally in backbending, the thighs externally rotate, the weight moves more into the outer edges of the feet, and this can cause imbalance in the forces moving down through the knees. Stay very connected to your inner feet as you come up. Play with holding a block between your thighs or strapping your leg at hip distance. Happy exploring :)

Do you have a method of preventing pain in the knees when performing backbends like urdhva dhanurasana and dwi pada viparita dandasana? Is there a way to use props to help?
